Unclaimed Vet To Be Buried Alone In Phoenix; Public Asked To Attend

February 26, 2019

If you are in the Phoenix area, or will be, Veterans groups are asking the public to help honor the life of a late veteran who will be buried alone on Wednesday, February 27 in Phoenix, Arizona.

Air Force Veteran Will Melvin Shegog passed away February 15 and has been declared an unclaimed veteran. He will be laid to rest tomorrow with full military honors through Dignity Memorial’s Homeless Veterans Burial Program. Shegog was born in Illinois and moved to the Phoenix area after serving in the Air Force between June 1978 through September 1979.

His service will be held at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona (23029 Cave Creek Road) in Phoenix starting at 11 am tomorrow, Wednesday, February 27.

“The public and members of the media are invited to attend the burial in support of Mr. Shegog’s service to the nation,” Dignity Memorial stated.

There will be a funeral procession from A.L. Moore-Grimshaw Mortuary (710 W. Bethany Home Rd.) to the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona escorted by the Patriot Guard Riders. Those wanting to participate in the escort need to be at the funeral home no later than 9:45 am.

"The Dignity Memorial Homeless Veterans Burial Program is a cooperative effort designed to ensure that veterans who are homeless, indigent, and have no family receive the honors in death that their service in life merited," said David Hinton of Dignity Memorial. "We're honored to assist in giving Mr. Shegog the dignified military services he deserves.”
